Uninterruptible power supply power classification

Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) have reached a mature level by providing clean and uninterruptible power to the sensitive loads in all grid conditions. Generally UPS system provides regulated sinusoidal output voltage, with low total harmonics distortion (THD), and high input power factor irrespective of the changes in the grid voltage.

There are two main categories of uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) 1, static and rotary. As the name implies, static UPSs do not have any moving parts in their con-verters. Whereas, rotary UPS use mechanical parts that rotate, such as motor/gen-erators, to function. This paper focuses only on static UPSs.

A UPS is normally referred to as an uninterruptible power supply, but it's also known as uninterruptible power system. The first part of UPS output performance classification is input dependency (i.e., how the UPS's output voltage is dependent upon the quality of the input voltage). The input dependency of a UPS falls into one of three classifications 3: Voltage and Frequency Independent (VFI).
