This study compared two nondestructive testing methods, SAM and CT, for the detection and 3D localization of defects in battery cells. It is important to detect such defects before performance degradation or safety issues arise.
Due to inline speed requirements, it may not be feasible to inspect the whole area of a battery cell. In this case, to accelerate the measurement, images can be obtained from selected areas, lines, or points of a battery cell.
CT is suitable for testing individual samples and for checking the stability of production lines. The two methods shown here require further improvements and have promising potential for expanding the nondestructive quality assurance of lithium-ion battery cells after production and for qualifying them in second-life applications.
