China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plans to more than triple the number of 5G base stations over the next four years, targeting a total of 3.64 million by end-2025, local newspaper China Daily reported. China aims to have about 3.64 million 5G base stations by the end of 2025.
In addition, a total of 819,000 5G base stations have been built by these three telecom giants, accounting for 70% of the world's total. As China has played a leading role in 5G technology, its 5G development has extraordinary significance for other countries.
To established the 5G mobile communication technological foundation, various research works or projects entailing main mobile infrastructure manufacturers, academia and international mobile network operators have been introduced recently.
The move comes as the country charted its vision for industrial growth during a two-day work conference of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. With 4.19 million 5G base stations already in operation, the industry regulator said that "promoting 5G revolution and 6G innovation will be one of the priorities" next year.
Each 5G base station has a range of between 800–1000 feet, or 0.15–0.19 miles. It makes up for its limited range by surpassing 4G in other key areas: data transfer speeds (bandwidth), latency, and capacity. Whereas 4G promised peak speeds of 1 Gbps, 5G's max speed is set at 20 Gbps.
Chinese main operators are China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. In addition to its expected expansion in the 5G field, China noted that it is also set to begin trials for 10-gigabit optical networks and enhance computing power infrastructure, reflecting the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
