Falling battery prices are improving the economics of storage in China, with costs for batteries used in standard energy storage down by about a fifth between the end of 2023 and mid-June, according to consultancy Shanghai Metals Market.
Batteries account for 90% of the increase in storage in the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 (NZE) Scenario, rising 14-fold to 1 200 GW by 2030. This includes both utility-scale and behind-the-meter battery storage. Other storage technologies include pumped hydro, compressed air, flywheels and thermal storage.
Investment in batteries in the NZE Scenario reaches USD 800 billion by 2030, up 400% relative to 2023. This doubles the share of batteries in total clean energy investment in seven years. Further investment is required to expand battery manufacturing capacity.
Around the beginning of this year, BloombergNEF (BNEF) released its annual Battery Storage System Cost Survey, which found that global average turnkey energy storage system prices had fallen 40% from 2023 numbers to US$165/kWh in 2024.
Trade body China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA) said last week (15 January) that 'new energy storage' capacity reached 78.3GW/184.2GWh by the end of 2024, a term it appears to use to describe technologies other than pumped hydro energy storage.
TrendForce notes that LFP batteries continue to gain a larger share of EV installations. While LFP cathode material prices rebounded slightly in November, the impact on the overall cost of EV batteries was minimal, keeping LFP battery prices stable. In contrast, demand for ternary EV batteries fell behind that of LFP batteries.
