Brazil's energy mix is diverse; hydropower, fossil fuels, biofuels, wind energy, and solar power all make significant contributions (Table 1). Brazil's total energy production increased by an average annual growth rate of 1.5% from 2011 to 2021.
Brazil's energy policies measure up well against the world's most urgent energy challenges. Access to electricity across the country is almost universal and renewables meet almost 45% of primary energy demand, making Brazil's energy sector one of the least carbon-intensive in the world.
Primary energy consumption in Brazil expands between 60% to 66% up to 2050, with energy use per capita increasing by around 50%. Most of the growth in primary energy demand comes from the Industry sector which expands by 83% in BAU, 101% in Rapid and 111% in Net Zero. Transport is the second source of sectoral energy demand growth.
Brazil's energy production in 2021 accounted for 2.0% of global production and 48.8% of South America's total. Energy consumption in Brazil increased by an average annual growth rate of 0.5% between 2011 and 2021, compared with 3.3% between 2000 and 2010, driven by Brazil's real GDP per capita growth (Figure 4).
In Brazil, the industrial and transportation sectors use most of the energy. Crude oil and other petroleum liquids production contributes significantly to Brazil's total energy production, accounting for 54.0% of total energy production and 44.2% of total energy consumption in 2021 (Table 1).
As a result, total oil supply is expected to grow by 1.2 mb/d to 4.2 mb/d in 2026, according to IEA forecasts. At COP26 where Brazil announced a long-term objective to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and a 50% carbon emissions reduction plan coupled with a zero illegal deforestation target by 2030.
