The main operating parts of a wind turbine generator system (WTGS) are turbine, nacelle, and tower; the nacelle consists of a generator, the mechanical gearing, wind and speed sensors, a control system, and a yaw mechanism system .
The aim of this work is to present the recent commercial designs of electrical generators in large wind turbines. Both the strengths and weaknesses of the existing systems are discussed. The most emerging technologies in high-power, low-speed electrical generators are investigated.
Based on the installed power, site of turbine, load type, and simplicity of control, the wind generator can be chosen. Squirrel-cage induction or brushless DC (BLDC) generators are usually used for small wind turbines in household applications. Doubly fed induction generators are usually used for megawatt size turbines.
This arrangement was first introduced by Areva and further promoted by Vestas, WinWinD, Adwen, Aerodyn and Guangdong Mingyang. Although most of the large wind turbine manufacturers adopted medium-speed PMSGs, Aerodyn with its SCD 8.0 MW used an electrically exited synchronous generator.
