Under the Philippine energy scenario, peak demand is seen growing by 5.3 percent annually until 2028. Energy storage is stepping into the spotlight of the country's green transition, with more companies making bold investments to unlock its game-changing potential.
As the Philippines gears up for the entry of more renewables into the grid, the government anticipates close to 2,000 MW of battery storage capacity to complement them. According to DOE data as of end-March, ESS projects with a combined capacity of 594 MW are committed to come online over the next three years.
At the World Clean Energy Conference, the DOE said that utilizing solar power with battery storage offers a path to more cost-effective energy solutions, allowing consumers to reduce their energy expenses by 15 to 20% through self-generation. “You save around 15 to 20% of the cost if you build your own generating facility.
“With this technology in place, storage of power is made possible. Power could be stored when not needed or in times of oversupply, and released whenever required or when there is undersupply,” he said. Ramon S. Ang, SMC chief executive officer, said BESS can have a transformative impact on the Philippine economy and the lives of Filipinos.
Ang explained that with a significant portion of peak supply provided by BESS, existing base load power plants can run continuously and operate more efficiently, resorting to lower electricity rates for Filipino consumers.
