To describe the mechanical response of cylindrical batteries more comprehensively, Zhu et al. established a detailed model of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, which can only reveal the failure sequence of components under axial compression. Additionally, some detailed models have taken into account the effects of strain rate [17, 18].
In this study, a heterogeneous finite element model was developed in LS-DYNA to investigate lateral impact on 6P cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells manufactured by Johnson Controls Inc. The results were compared to those from a homogenized model previously reported by the authors and also experimental data and showed a good agreement.
Component-level failure behaviors are presented employing the inertial effects. Mechanical and electrical failure characteristics are analyzed under different impacts. Dynamic evolutions of batteries are illustrated at different states of charge. The development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been constrained by impact safety concerns.
Cylindrical 18650 lithium-ion battery's homogeneous jellyroll models are found in the current literature, which addresses the battery failures for quasi-static and dynamic simulations. However detailed layered models, which are equally important to understand sequential failures due to mechanical loading conditions, are not found in detail.
Based on the above results, the detailed model of the 18,650 lithium-ion battery can accurately predict the force–displacement response (including peak force and failure displacement) and the short-circuit moment of the battery cell under quasi-static loading.
