With every natural disaster and large-scale power outage in the news, people are thinking more seriously about how to achieve energy independence. As extreme heat, wildfires or winter storms pressure utility grids, there's an urgency to find local solutions.
In order to overcome the problems associated with the intermittency of solar PV and enhance the reliability, energy storage systems like batteries and/or backup systems like diesel generators are commonly included in the microgrids [11, 12].
The name implies the principle component in a PV-based microgrid is the solar PV system. However, the generated output power of a PV system is dependent on the weather condition, that is, solar irradiance and temperature; and the intermittency in the solar irradiance causes fluctuations in the generated output power of the solar PV system.
More advanced microgrid models incorporate longer lasting batteries into their design as well. Microgrid energy storage provides power when the grid goes down. Solar plus storage solutions incorporate energy storage batteries for both solar storage and backup power. They also save costs on electricity during peak hours.
