China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) unveiled plans to more than triple the number of 5G base stations over the next four years, targeting a total of 3.64 million by end-2025, local newspaper China Daily reported. Under this plan, China aims to have 26 5G base stations for every 10,000 people by the end of 2025.
By 2025, one in four mobile connections is expected to be on a 5G network, with 4G expected to still have a dominant lead at 55 percent of connections in 2025. As the following chart, based on GSMA estimates, shows, Greater China is currently leading the race to 5G with 29 percent of mobile connections in the region utilizing the new standard.
Chinese main operators are China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. In addition to its expected expansion in the 5G field, China noted that it is also set to begin trials for 10-gigabit optical networks and enhance computing power infrastructure, reflecting the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
North America is a distant second with 13 percent adoption and Europe is even further behind at 4 percent of all mobile connections. By 2025, 5G is expected to become the predominant standard in Greater China and North America, while the rest of the world is still expected to rely heavily on 4G for the time being.
The move comes as the country charted its vision for industrial growth during a two-day work conference of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. With 4.19 million 5G base stations already in operation, the industry regulator said that "promoting 5G revolution and 6G innovation will be one of the priorities" next year.
Consumer electronics and automotive applications are forecast to both have a 21.7% share of the 5G infrastructure by 2025. Meanwhile, industrial apps will have a 20.1% share while energy and utilities will have a 15.7% share. (Statista, 2020)
